Our History

In 1975 Muriel Jordan, Chief Admitting Officer for Presbyterian Hospital and Janie Harrell, Director of Admissions for Charlotte Memorial Hospital attended a convention of the National Association of Hospital Admitting Managers. They returned with a desire to have a statewide Admitting organization in North Carolina. Jordan was referred to Dr. James Camp of the North Carolina Hospital Association to discuss the endeavor.

The first statewide meeting of the North Carolina Association of Hospital Admitting Managers (NCAHAM) was held in November 1976 and was sponsored by the North Carolina Hospital Association. Muriel Jordan was elected to serve as the first president of the NCAHAM on November 5, 1976.

The name has since been changed to North Carolina Association of Healthcare Access Management to reflect the broadened scope of responsibilities in admitting departments. However, our mission has remained the same.

Continuously update the CAM exam to reflect the changes in the industry. Administer the exam. Maintain CEU records for recertification.

Gather or write appropriate newsworthy items and submit for publication in the NCAHAM newsletter. Review website and provide information updates, and suggestions for improvements.

Review the Constitution and Bylaws to ensure compliance and propose revisions/amendments to the Board of Directors for review, with final approval by membership.

Research seminars and workshops, and plan and develop educational programs for approval by the Board. Obtain continuing education credits (CEUs) for each program, and provide certificates to all members completing the programs.

Maintain and up to date membership roster and monitor membership trends. Conduct membership renewal and an annual membership drive to spread awareness of NCAHAM and encourage participation.

Solicit nominations for open positions. Screen and select candidates as outlines in the Constitution, and submit nominations to the Board of Directors.
